Panda Parley #2:

Elder Charms of Good Pixels

Today in another edition of Panda Parlay I want to discuss the Elder Charms of Good Fotune.  These little goodies amplify the loot system in an amazing way and provide each raider with some amount of power over their own gear sets.

How To Get Them

The one word answer that seems to work for how to get anything in Pandaria is DAILIES.  There is a quest given once per week that allows you to collect 90 lesser charms of good fortune (which come from dailies) and turn them into 3 Elder charms.  I am not a fan of having to do 45 dailies per week to get the elder charms but Blizzard deems it necessary to grind dailies (even after exalted it seems) to get charms.  Right now it isn’t that much of a “waste” since nobody is exalted with every faction but that will change as time goes on.  I still prefer to not be pigeonholed into daily grinding to raid but I digress (a topic for another day).

What Are They Good For?

The Elder charms can be used on any raid boss (including world bosses) for an extra roll on loot.  The loot is soulbound and can be something that you already have.  They are very useful to use on bosses where you are competing with many other classes on loot and/or to gear up quickly (especially on new boss kills).  These are being used by most raids everywhere and a “good” raider should be collecting 3 elder charms per week to contribute the most to their raid.  Note that you cannot stockpile more than 10 Elder Charms.

Conclusion

The Charms are something that raiders will need until they get into deep farm on a boss.  Once you have all the loot you need then you can save them up for the next raid but with the release of the 2 new raids just around the corner this isn’t something that you are likely going to be able to store up.  From personal experience and numbers I have seen they have around a 12% chance to give loot.  As I said this provides a very powerful advantage and should be considered standard raid preparation along with bringing flasks and food.
